A New Restaurant with a Nostalgic Flair
Architectural renovation to create new hotel restaurant at Dartmouth College
Cambridge Seven Associates in collaboration with Bill Rooney Studio designed PINE, a new restaurant helmed by famed chef Michael Schlow at the Hanover Inn at Dartmouth College. Recalling the famous “Lone Pine,” an enduring symbol of Dartmouth College, the restaurant features indigenous wood local to New Hampshire and New England. The décor is warm and inviting, with a nostalgic flair that is reflective of rural and agrarian New England architecture. Hand-sawn barn board walls and ceiling beams, repurposed from a Dartmouth barn, preserve the inherent character of the elements. The interior columns are sheathed in barn board, deliberately spaced apart to allow light to spill between the “cracks,” recalling the effect of light peaking into an old barn from the sun. The fireplace, an interpretation of a nineteenth century New England industrial mill and blacksmith forge, serves as the centerpiece of the restaurant and features riveted steel trestles seated on New Hampshire granite hearth stones.
