Bridging Downtown: An Urban Design Solution

Cambridge Seven was commissioned by the City of Worcester to design two Sky-Bridges, one connecting the Worcester Centrum Centre with the parking garage, and another connecting the proposed Hilton Garden Inn with the Centrum. Our solution was to combine them into a single, elegant, cable-stayed bridge, spanning 274 feet. Constructed primarily of glass and steel, the 3,000 sf bridge will serve as an urban icon as well as a gateway for an important part of downtown Worcester. The mast, while reminiscent of church steeples nearby, will be clearly visible as one travels in and around the City. A stainless steel mesh in a curved form will be lit in the evenings, and a new glass elevator will provide a more direct ADA accessible route for visitors.
