Since opening day in 1981, the National Aquarium, designed by Cambridge Seven, has been a key element in the renaissance of Baltimore’s Inner Harbor. The Aquarium has inspired stewardship of the natural environment while contributing to the region’s economy. In the spirit of continuing its commitment to the Baltimore community, the Aquarium sought to create a new “urban campus” on the harbor, an open space filled with activity that encompasses the Aquarium’s buildings and new outdoor attractions. Open, outdoor spaces with fountains and exhibits make the water’s edge a more natural and inviting destination. An open view corridor created within the park links the piers and other attractions. This is accomplished via a new pedestrian bridge, joining two piers, along this view corridor, which facilitates circulation between the various attractions and businesses.
