Cambridge Seven Associates was responsible for the introduction of the MBTA’s now-famous “spider map,” which has since been replicated in countries around the world.  In addition, the firm introduced Station Design Standards for the MBTA almost 40 years ago, and these standards have stood the test of time. These standards defined guidelines for station modernization including architectural planning, circulation, materials, lighting, and station hardware. New names and system color codes for each transit line, as well as graphic standards for maps and signage. The Arlington subway station in downtown Boston was remodeled in 1968 as a materials test site and demonstration of the new design standards and components.
