Located in Orani, Italy, Cambridge Seven’s design of the Nivola Museum involved the adaptive reuse of a local wash house, or lavatoio, creating a permanent museum for a collection of work by the sculptor Costantino Nivola. The lavatoio was remodeled as a single gallery space with white stucco walls and a ceiling of timber trusses and terra cotta tiles. Light from the arched windows and central doorway floods the space, which is filled with Nivola's sculptures perched upon granite bases built up from the granite floor. In addition to the main exhibit space, the 10,000 sf facility includes offices, and a gift shop, complemented by an outdoor sculpture garden.
