Basketball was born in Springfield, Massachusetts and continues to contribute to the rebirth of the city. The Basketball Hall of Fame makes a compelling statement by projecting a three-story image of basketball players depicted in 17 panels along the north side. As the driver passes, the panel images merge, revealing the players in action. On its south side, fronting the river, the building opens up with a transparent, “basketball orange”-glazed facade. Architecture magazine called the Hall “suitably colorful and playful.” Its bold and whimsical exhibits pay tribute to a well-loved sport. They include films and videos produced by Cambridge Seven, glass-encased memorabilia, a basketball “fountain” in the lobby, and exhibits such as the “Shoot Out” in which visitors can test their skill by shooting baskets from a moving belt.
