The Ames Building, designed by Boston’s Shepley, Rutan and Coolidge and built in 1889, is the second tallest bearing wall structure in the United States. The Ames is undergoing a complete interior renovation to convert the former office building into one of Boston’s newest and most beautiful boutique hotels. Normandy Real Estate Partners commissioned Cambridge Seven to perform the historic restoration of the entire building and act as hotel planner. Morgans Hotel Group will be the operator of the Hotel, and the Rockwell Group is designing the interior public space. The hotel, scheduled to open Fall 2009, will feature 115 guestrooms, a restaurant, bar/lounge and new lobby. Historic elements of the building, including the lobby’s tile vaulted ceiling, the interior stairway and the building exterior, will be fully restored to their original splendor.
