The "Acquario di Genova" is the first of a new generation of modern aquaria in Europe. The architectural design is a collaboration of Cambridge Seven Associates and the Renzo Piano Building Workshop, and the exhibits were designed by Cambridge Seven. Designed for dramatic emotional and intellectual impact, the aquarium offers visitors an experience of marine habitats and animals from two time perspectives, the 15th and 20th centuries, and two cultural perspectives, Europe and the New World. This popular public attraction focuses on the Mediterranean Sea and its ecosystems, but the "Acquario di Genova" also serves as an international educational institution, research center, a marine mammal rescue center, and a conference center.
