Heralded as the largest regional shopping center in the country, Franklin Mills transforms the retail mall into a major tourist attraction. Designed by Cambridge Seven Associates as a fanciful miniature city, the 2 million sf mall is a unique destination that transforms merchandising into a festive, recreational experience. The design includes playful references to Ben Franklin and Philadelphia landmarks which distinguish the mall's entrances and reoccur throughout the interior public spaces, helping to orient the shopper. Retail tenant spaces are organized along an interior "main street" and a series of "courts." Performances, daily auctions, push-cart vendors, food pavilions, multi-media programs, and other "street" activities bring life to the space. The project was done in association with Milton Glaser.
