After years of expansion and the addition of an IMAX theater, the New England Aquarium commissioned Cambridge Seven and landscape architect Halvorson Design Partnership to address expansion of the aquarium with a new mammal pavilion and outdoor experience on their downtown waterfront site. The plan reconnects the pier at Central Wharf with Boston's vibrant Harborwalk, educating the public on the world's oceans and the issue of climate change. The design relocates ticketing and long queues, providing space for new visitor services, retail and dining opportunities, school groups, water taxi connections, whale watch excursions, events, and new outdoor exhibits. Phase 1 of the master plan was recently completed and included the Central Wharf pier expansion and the new Marine Mammal Pavilion, designed by McManus Architects with exhibits by C7A and NEAq staff.
