The new 100,000 sf (65,000 sf net) laboratory unites the research activities of several different departments to create a new interdisciplinary institute. The 3-story facility at Rice University contains 51,000 sf of lab space for cell and developmental biology, bioengineering, organic chemistry and basic medical science, an animal facility, and 14,000 sf of administrative space. The design team of C7A and RWS Architects, with Earl Walls, developed a laboratory planning module to accommodate various user needs and promote long-term flexibility. Rice's Bioscience and Bioengineering Laboratory is the recipient of R&D Magazine's Lab of the Year Award.
