Cambridge Seven led a team to present a Master Plan concept to help Newton-Wellesley Hospital (NWH) provide for a new state-of-the-art, expanded Emergency Suite, accommodate parking demand, and re-organize and clarify patient and visitor circulation. The proposed Plan, requested as part of a limited competition, outlined a multi-faceted strategy to expand parking, simplify vehicular access and circulation, re-orient the major visitor and patient entry experience and add a new single-level 35,000sf emergency department within the existing facility footprint. A by-product of the Master Plan identified how later expansion of hospital facilities could occur without negatively impacting existing operations or aggravating neighborhood concerns about the overall impact of NWH on the surrounding community.

The Master Plan called for 500 new parking spaces for visitors and patients, a new, expanded and centralized main entry lobby, an emergency department suite, incorporation of a nearby historic building to be relocated to NWH as a meeting and conference center for hospital and community events, and the addition of major landscaping amenities to improve the overall character of the NWH campus. Implementation of the Plan would take place in three, 18-month phases: parking, emergency suite, and entry lobby and site improvements.
