Cambridge Seven was chosen as a semi-finalist in the competition to design MARSEncounter in the East Pavilion of the Museum of Science and Industry.  C7A envisioned the experience as a self-directed journey into science as exploration, focusing on a wide range of scientific endeavors – space technology, physics, biology, botany, geology, and our fascination with Mars, simulating the process of discovery so fundamental to science. As part of the C7A vision, the focus for the Mars portion of the exhibit would be the East Pavilion’s central vaulted space, nearly 60’ tall at the highest point. Under this plan, the floor in the center would be removed, creating a 75’ tall dark volume for media and “object theater” in the heart of the experience, referred to as the Mars Gravity Well. Through trompe l’oeil and digital projection the space would appear to extend higher and lower, from space above to the Mars surface apparently far below. Visitors would not occupy the volume, but rather surrounding galleries will offer glimpses around, intrusions into, and a bridge across.
