With the West Cambridge Youth Center, Cambridge (LEED Silver certified) has begun a City-wide program to bring green design to new community facilities. For this 30,000 sf multi-use facility, Cambridge Seven created extremely flexible space that allowed the building to be “small but beautiful,” serving users and needs with minimal environmental impact on the existing urban neighborhood. Sited near mass transit, the building further reduces the heat island effect by spanning over 50% of the parking and using low albedo roofing. C7A incorporated solar photovoltaic arrays on the roof to reduce energy load and used rapidly renewable materials, such as bamboo millwork and linoleum flooring, throughout, with an eye to low VOC products. All spaces have daylight views, with daylighting occupancy sensors as well.
