At their wildlife refuge on the Parker River, just off Plum Island Sound, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recognized that their new Headquarters and Visitor Center needed to reflect their environmental commitment. By creating a new facility, Cambridge Seven Associates controlled orientation of the buildings, perimeter height, and roof geometry to minimize energy use. Through sun shading strategies using overhangs, automated louvers, and motorized casements, C7A integrated natural ventilation with solar screening. Featured on the Winter 2003 cover of Eco-Structure, the new center also incorporated structural insulated panel wall system technology and geothermal heat pumps.
