Massachusetts General Hospital and the Friends of the Cancer Center recognized that a green roof could be good for the health of patients and for the environment. Cambridge Seven Associates and landscape designers Halvorson Design Partnership designed the new 6,500 sf of open roof high above Boston and the Charles River to support soil depths of 8” – 36.” This approach provides four times more insulation than a conventional roof and allows a wide range of plant types and sizes. The lush garden, which was featured in the article, “Sweet Sedum” in September 2006 green design issue of Metropolis, creates an escape for patients and their families, reduces the urban heat island, and provides a new home for birds and butterflies that have discovered its secret location.
