The Peter Buck Center for Health and Fitness (LEED Silver) reinforces Bowdoin College's commitment to sustainability. Cambridge Seven's design takes full advantage of the site, transforming a stark, windowless brick building into a warm, glowing glass structure, expressing openness and invitation. The facade is an artful composition of three types of glass: clear, 40% and 80% translucent. This variety of transparency allows for areas of privacy (while working out in the gym) while also creating a fascinating play of light and shadow both day and night. The project's green elements include a high-performance building envelope, high-efficiency lighting, and mechanical and air handling equipment for optimal energy performance. Building products were locally extracted and manufactured, and more than 95 percent of the construction waste was diverted from landfills.
